Voting & Elections

Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, 12th Edition · §§ 44–46

Most ordinary questions are decided by a majority of votes cast, unless a higher threshold applies.

Some actions require a two-thirds vote, and ties do not adopt a motion requiring a majority.

The chair announces the result and the effect of the vote.

For elections, always consult the GCA bylaws before applying generic parliamentary rules.

GCA-specific rules

Article VI provides for ballot voting and plurality election; an unopposed office may be elected by voice or acclamation. Article XIII requires a two-thirds vote, with the prescribed quorum and notice, for bylaw amendments.

Helpful reminder

Abstentions are normally not votes cast for or against a proposal. Be precise about the voting threshold used.
